About MIBT

Top

Q : Who is MIBT?

A : MIBT – Melbourne Institute of Business and Technology has been in partnership with Deakin University since 1996. MIBT is a popular choice for both Australian and International students and provides quality pathway programs to over 70 undergraduate and postgraduate Deakin University courses.

Q : What courses does MIBT offer?

A : MIBT offers:

  • Certificate IV in University Foundation Studies which leads into MIBT Diplomas or selected 1st year degree programs at Deakin University.
  • Diploma programs in Commerce, Computing, Engineering, Health Sciences, Management, Media and Communication, and Science which lead into second year Bachelor degrees at Deakin University.
  • Postgraduate Qualifying Programs lead into 1st year of selected Master degrees at Deakin University. Only available to International students.

Q : Where is MIBT located?

A : Being located on campus enables students to access and enjoy all facilities and services, creating a smoother transition to their degree at Deakin.
MIBT also offers courses in Jakarta, Indonesia and the college is known as MIBT Indonesia – for more information about MIBT Indonesia visit: www.mibt.or.id

Q : Since MIBT is at two locations in Victoria can I choose which campus I can study on?

A : It depends which course you want to do. The Certificate IV or Diploma in Commerce are offered at both Melbourne and Geelong, so you can choose the campus you would like to study on. MIBT’s other courses are designated to a specific campus. Health Science, Management and Media and Communication and Postgraduate Qualifying Programs are at the Melbourne Campus at Burwood. Engineering and Science are located at the Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds.

Q : As MIBT is located on Deakin University campuses, can MIBT students use the campus facilities and services?

A : Absolutely. As an MIBT student you are able to use all services and facilities at Deakin University including the library and sports and aquatic centre. You are also able to join Deakin’s clubs and societies.

Q : Are the Diploma courses equivalent to first year university?

A : Yes. The Diploma courses are the same level as those for the relevant first year undergraduate programs offered by Deakin University.

Q : What is the advantage of going to MIBT rather than doing first year University?

A : The advantages for students are many. Classes are much smaller than the usual university lecture size. MIBT students have more class time per unit than university which allows more time to understand the course. You also have the choice of studying over two or three semesters in one calendar year.

Q : Do I have to complete the Certificate or Diploma program in two semesters (eight months)?

A : No. While it is possible to complete either program in two semesters (eight months), some students opt to study over three semesters, to allow more time to concentrate on each individual unit.

Q : Are MIBT courses Centrelink approved?

A : Yes. Students undertaking a MIBT Certificate or Diploma course may apply for Youth Allowance, Austudy Payment, ABSTUDY and the Pensioner Education Supplement.

Q : Are MIBT programs recognised by other Australian universities?

A : Yes. Many Australian universities recognise the MIBT Diploma programs. Advanced standing is given on an individual case basis.

Q : What is the composition of the student population at MIBT?

A : Students at MIBT are from many countries around the world. Most come from Australia, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Malaysia, Thailand and China. The ratio is 80% International students and 20% Australian/Permanent Residents.

Q : Can I study part-time?

A : Australian/Permanent residents can study part-time. International students must study full-time to meet visa conditions.

Q : What if I need help with my studies whilst I am at MIBT?

A : There are many avenues of help and support throughout your trimesters with MIBT. If you find yourself having difficulty in a unit, you should contact your lecturer and organise a time to meet for consultation. A Student Adviser is also available to help with many areas of your studies and your life at MIBT.

About the classes

Top

Q : How are classes taught?

A : All classes are four hours duration. The first two hours consists of a lecture. The final two hours are allocated to tutorials, workshops or computer laboratory sessions. There is some variation in this structure according to the nature of the individual units and specific requirements.

Q : What time are classes scheduled at MIBT?

A: Classes run from 8.30am-12.30pm and 1.30pm-5.30pm. Limited units may be offered week nights from 5.30pm-9.30pm and Saturday from 9.30am-1.30pm.

Q : What is the maximum number of units that I can study each trimester?

A: Four units is the maximum for any student in any one trimester.

Q : What is the minimum number of units that I can study each trimester?

A : Due to visa conditions international students must study a minimum of 3 units each trimester unless it is the students last trimester. There is no minimum for Australian students.

Q : What if I fail some units - do I have to repeat the whole trimester?

A : No. Because of the flexible nature of the program it is possible to progress to new units whilst retaking those which have been failed. As three trimesters of study can be completed in one calendar year, students who fail one or more units can get back 'on track' without loss of time.

Q : Do I have to have OSHC?

A : All international students must have OSHC. From 1 July 2010, The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) changed the student visa requirements. Under condition 8501, international students will have to obtain Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the proposed duration of their student visa. For students who will be undertaking a packaged course, there cannot be a gap in the OSHC coverage.

Q : What does OSHC Cover?

A : OSHC helps pay for medical and hospital care should you become ill during your stay in Australia. OSHC will also pay for most prescription drugs and emergency ambulance transport. If you require ancillary services you can take out extra OSHC, provided by an approved OSHC provider. Make sure you bring any optical or medical prescriptions with you to Australia.
