English language requirements

The language of instruction at ICM is English.

Before gaining admission into an ICM program, you must demonstrate a suitable level of English proficiency. This can be done by obtaining one of the results shown in the table below.

For applicants impacted by IELTS or TOEFL test centre closures due to COVID-19, ICM will temporarily accept the IELTS Indicator, TOEFL iBT Home Edition as meeting English Language Proficiency requirements. The IELTS Indicator and TOEFL iBt Home Edition will be accepted at the same levels as indicated below.

Direct entry

If you meet the direct entry English language requirements and the relevant academic requirements for your country (see Admission Requirements), you will be eligible for direct entry to Stage I or Stage II programs.

Mixed entry

If you meet the mixed-entry English language requirements and the relevant academic requirements for your country, you will be eligible to start Stage I or Stage II programs with the addition of one academic English course, to be taken during the first term of study.

Students with successful completion of a three-year secondary school program in a country where English is a primary language will be exempt from providing English Proficiency scores. Please refer to this link for the list of countries where English is the primary language.

ICM regularly reviews its admission requirements and its English Language requirements. Students wanting to submit TOEFL scores should request that originals be sent to ICM directly quoting Institution Code 6961.

Conditional admission with the English Language Centre (ELC)

If you don’t meet the minimum English language requirements for your desired ICM program, you may enrol in the Intensive Academic English Program (IAEP), at the University of Manitoba’s English Language Centre (ELC), to improve your academic English language proficiency. The IAEP is the only English language program that will gain you conditional admission to ICM.

ELC’s Intensive Academic English Program

The UM’s English Language Centre (ELC) offers the Intensive Academic English Program (IAEP) and provides English language training for university bound international students. The IAEP prepares you for university studies by providing you with opportunities to develop and strengthen the language and academic skills necessary to succeed in degree programing. Each level consists of 24 hours of instruction per week for 14 weeks. Depending on your initial placement level, the IAEP can take as little as one level to complete:

January, May and September start dates
Average class size is less than 12 students per class
Highly qualified and experienced instructors
In-person classes are held at the Fort Garry campus, so you can enjoy the experience of studying English while having access to all university facilities. Remote delivery and hybrid study options are also available
