Math placement test – Math 101

This course provides students with a chance to master key concepts in pre-calculus mathematics (grade 12 math) and its applications. It also introduces students to calculus in a highly supportive atmosphere in order to prepare them to succeed in first year math calculus and science courses. Content includes Review of Algebra, Graphs and Inequalities, Functions, Analytical Geometry, Sequences and Series, Systems of Equations and Inequalities, Linear Functions, Quadratic Functions, maximum and minimum problems.

Below is a list of different concepts that will be reviewed in the class, along with some helpful videos from the popular Khan Academy website, a free online resource!

*MATH 101 and MATH 103 are currently be offered in alternating terms.

Review of Algebra

Practice exercises include monomials, polynomials. synthetic division, complex numbers, quadratic equations in the complex number system, interval notations, and solving inequalities.

Here are links to the study material:

Graphs & Functions

Practices in distance and midpoint formulas, graphs of equations in two variables, intercepts, and symmetry.

Systems of Equations

This section covers system of linear equations, substitution & elimination, and system of nonlinear equations.

Trigonometry, Sequences, & More Functions

Practices include applications involving right triangles, the law of sines, the law of cosines, area of a triangle, arithmetic sequences, geometric sequences, geometric series, the graph of a function, properties of functions, library of functions, piecewise-defined functions, graphing techniques, and transformations.

Algebra Functions

Students should understand linear functions & their properties, quadratic functions & their properties, quadratic models, building quadratic functions from data, polynomial functions, models, and properties of rational functions.

Trigonometric Functions

This section reviews composite functions, one-to-one functions, inverse functions, trigonometric functions – unit circle approach, properties of trigonometric functions, graphs of the sin and cosine functions, inverse sine, cosine & tangent functions, inverse trigonometric functions, and trigonometric identities.
